    Concrete Pump Repair Checklist

    Before getting rid of your old concrete pump and getting yourself into debt with a new unit, take a careful look at what you currently have. Putting an old pump back into service just takes careful analysis of the main components:

    Repairing pumps with bad engines can cost upwards of $10,000. To determine how severe the engine damage is, look for clues in:
    • smoke color;
    • idle smoothness;
    • no blow by;
    • no oil in the cooler’s water;
    • good compression on every piston (tip: your nearest diesel mechanic can give you the pressure numbers);
    • any overheating issues.

    REMEMBER TO ALWAYS FOLLOW A GOOD MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE, click here for more details

    Chassis

    Make sure there are no breaks on the cross members and no structural damage to any of the frame components, such as a bad twist or bend. Check underneath for cracks or tears.

    The chassis is a particular problem, since it was designed to withstand the weight and the friction of the operating unit. It also carries the pump’s serial number, so they are in effect ‘paired’.

    Hydraulic Pump

    Hydraulic pump concrete pumpA non-functioning hydraulic pump is often as bad as a broken-down engine, if not worse. Normal wear and tear, lack of maintenance (draining the condensed water every week from the main tank) and even dirty oil can all cause a bad pump.

    As soon as the unit’s pump breaks down, it releases traces of its internal copper components into the system, causing massive plugs and further damage to the whole hydraulic manifold assemblies.

    Failed hydraulic pumps can quickly escalate to cause irreparable damage, resulting in repair costs that are greater than the machine is actually worth. If the damage has not gone too far, we can flush and blow out the whole system, scrub it, and prime it with new hydraulic oil. SEE HERE How to Test a Hydraulic Pump

    If the engine, chassis, and hydraulic pump are in good working order, then you can assume that it is feasible and worth your money and time to fix it.

    MEMBERS OF THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU +AAA RATING

    Of our many customers, one story comes to mind. We’ll call him Mr. “Top Pump Man” to keep him anonymous, and because we think he is the “top”.

    This guy has been pumping for over 25 years, and has all the knowledge the industry has to give. And, like any cement pumper, he also has problems – including the lack of a skilled concrete pump repair shop.

    When the construction industry tanked years ago, many pump repair shops that used to offer good-quality, honest repairs went under. The industry lost a great section of its skilled labor. Many pump technicians moved on to other things, and it is hard to get a concrete pump fixed the right way these days.

    Mr. Top Pump Man owns a 1998 model Reed B30. He brought the machine to our shop in Kissimmee, FL, (near Orlando) about 4 weeks ago. The unit had several electrical problems, like a fried brain and exposed hot wires. All the wear parts, including the piston cups, were wiped out completely, on top of many other mechanical issues.

    We were amazed at how resourceful this customer had been. He was very determined, fixing the small, day-to-day problems as they occurred to ensure he could keep pumping concrete. But eventually, the machine was suffering from too many faults, and he was starting to lose jobs. This man relied on the pump to make a living for his family, so he couldn’t just stop pumping.

    We had the solution for him

    Mr. Top Pump Man came to JED Alliance looking for a solution to his concrete pump’s problems. He needed to get back to work quickly to take advantage of the rising Florida economy.

    Our concrete pump repair technicians diagnosed his machine and provided an estimate of the work they needed to do to get him pumping again. The customer was thrilled at the cost savings over buying a new pump and was super-satisfied with our company’s work.

    Concrete Pump repairs

    Refurbishing concrete pumps is not just placing new parts in the place of the old ones. Concrete pump repair is also foreseeing some problems that the machine might have based on certain behaviors. It becomes more of an artisan job than a mechanics job in reality. You can see a whole forum of pump users and their everyday problems HERE. For example, when you are refurbishing a concrete trailer pump and you notice that maybe the unit is not achieving all the bar or PSI that it is supposed to, normally one would think: “Well, I have to replace the hydraulic pump”. However, not necessarily this is the case. It could be something as simple as adjusting the RPMs on the engine or maybe fixing the pressure on the hydraulic pump itself. And this is easily done by hand.

    Looks can be deceiving

    Sometimes when performing a concrete pump repair, the machine seems that she is working just fine, hydraulic pressure is good, but then when she’s heating up, we notice that there’s certain strokes that are not quite there. They are not quite as strong, they are not quite as powerful as the other ones are. And we find that sometimes these are little telltales of big problems to happen. Sometimes we find little tiny leaks on the floor after sitting the machine overnight and we find that some of these leaks come from points that are really easy to fix but sometimes they also come from main hydraulic assembly. One would think: “The leak is not big enough. It is not a problem”. You can let it go and you will eventually find out what it is. Or like, it has been the case with us, we opened it up completely and we find out that a shaft maybe inside one of the hydraulic pumps or something is damaged. And then this was going to become something even worse.

    Sometimes we find just a tiny bit of oil in the water and this could mean that in the future, there’s going to be water also in the differential cylinders causing the hydraulic pump to receive water costing you thousands of dollars.

    Experience is everything

    We anticipate those problems and we anticipate any future issues by truly testing the unit, by having several eyes on top of it, by making sure that no one forgets to do all its check points before delivery.

    Refurbishing a concrete pump is not necessarily easy. It is a process that we have learned over the years with many many many mistakes. But lately, it has been with many very grateful customers that appreciate what we do and that understand that even though these machines are not necessarily perfect, all the work was done with the best of our knowledge, integrity, and intentions.
